Coach Frank Layden Speaks at Sam Granato Meeting

One of my favorite people I have met over the years is Coach Frank Layden. Frank is the former coach and President of the Utah Jazz, and is knwn as the Yogi Berra of Utah. Frank tells the story of his early years as coach in the mid-80's when the team wasn't very good and people weren't coming to the games, and so they'd put on the marquee "TONIGHT: FRANK LAYDEN (and his Utah Jazz) vs CHICAGO BULLS). Someone once asked him what time the game was and he asked them what time they could make it.

His two trademarks are his sense of humor and always telling you what's on his mind, both things seen in this video from a Sam Granato house party (h/t Utah Amicus):

The Meanace of the Public Library Option

San Francisco Chronicle:

Of all the current assaults on our noble republic, perhaps none is more dangerous than the public option - specifically, the public library option.

For far too long, this menace has undermined the very foundations of our economy. While companies like Amazon and Barnes & Noble struggle valiantly each day to sell books, these communistic cabals known as libraries undercut the hard work of good corporate citizens by letting people read their books for free. How is the private sector supposed to compete with free? And just what does this public option give us? People can spend hours and hours in these dens of socialism without having to buy so much as a cappuccino. Furthermore, not only can anyone read books for free in the library, they can take them home, too. They get a simple card that can be used at any library in town. No checking on the previous condition of books they've read. No literacy test. Nothing. Yet, do these libertines of literature let you choose any book you want, anytime you want it? No. Have you ever tried to get the latest best-seller at a public library? They put you on a waiting list for that, my friend. And if you do ask these government apparatchiks a question about a book, they start talking your ear off, and pretty soon they're telling you what to read.

Of course, if you break one of their petty rules and return a book late, you have to pay fines that mount grotesquely each day. Even if you die, your overdue fees keep piling up. Is that not a death tax? How long must the elderly live in fear of burdening their children with these unfair sanctions on their estates?

Don't be fooled for a minute. Somebody has to pay for these "free" libraries, and I'll tell you who it is, pal. Those good ol' suckers, the American taxpayers, that's who.

Have you ever wondered who's really behind this public library option? And don't you think it's fishy that they mask their nefarious activities with benign-sounding names, like Friends of the Library? What's their real agenda - and why do they have so many "volunteer" meetings, anyway?

No, my fellow Americans. We cannot wait until we're all goose-stepped into a massive book checkout line. This assault on capitalism and our very way of life has got to end. Be subversive ... burn your library card! Go out and buy a book!

Open Letter to GOP Chair Dave Hansen

Dear Mr Hansen-

I read in the papers that you oppose the two initiatives making the rounds for 2010.

And I just wanted to say thank you.

Thanks you for continuing to prove that Utah Republicans move contrary to the will of the citizens of Utah.

Thank you for thinking that these maps are logical.

Because, really, the more I talk to my Republican friends, the more they are telling me they are fed up with you.

And, not only are they willing to not blindly vote for local Republicans, some of them are pondering runs for the Legislature.

As Democrats.

Because they are ready for a change in our state. They have looked past the slick advertising and realized that the problems this state has are not the fault of Democrats, because we have been in the minority for so long.

Yes, you'll pull out the twin pillars that Republicans always pull out when they are about to lose somebody: gay marriage and abortion.

However, more and more people are realizing that unless there are major shifts, these are really non-issues in their lives, because nothing will change in our laws.

They are only major issues because You and Paul Mero tell them it is.

So, go ahead. Oppose the will of the people. Eventually, the people will wake up.

If a Tree Falls In the Woods.....

Six Months ago, I had a little rant about the Utah Democratic Party. It was a response to an anonymous comment to another post.

Well, here's another couple of things on use of new media. The first is a video on new media included in a must-read post from JM Bell.

The second is from Republican U.S. Senate Candidate Cherilyn Eagar. While she is near the bottom of my list of candidates to support, she has a point. Ignore the messenger, and pretend that this was coming from 455 S 300 E:

We're running a fast-paced campaign to contact and to get out to meet all the delegates around the state. We're raising money during a time when funding nationally is way down and the dog days of summer are still upon us, but we're doing it.

We are running an assertive media campaign, consistently sending out news releases on important issues such as the Wyden-Bennett health care bill and recently a statement to oppose our incumbent Senator's vote for cloture to appoint animal rights and gun control activist Cass Sunstein. Did you read about it in any of our major papers? Have you heard me on any major local talk radio recently?

Probably not. One major radio station announcer explained on air that the station had made a decision that it would only cover the top two contenders in this race. I emailed the producer and said, "Since I beat our incumbent Senator in a straw poll recently, does that put me in the top two?" :-) No response.

And you most likely will not get any response, at least not for a while. [...]

But there is an answer to a calculated absence of what we call "earned" media. It's called "new media." You will get the story here and online on Twitter and on blogs that you will not get in the mainstream media. We have no option but to surround them, as Glenn Beck says. So tell your friends to get connected to Facebook today. Learn how to use Twitter and to blog. Connect with the right people online that will get the message far and wide. This is a grassroots campaign and we will gather and unite the grassroots!

Yes, much of social media is preaching to the choir. However, the choir is not being preached to now. And, some members of the choir can be influenced by other preachers. Furthermore, many Utahns need the choir (their friends and neighbors) to further emphasize what is coming from the preacher (the State Party and elected officials). It's people's friends and neighbors who are (most likely)) going to convert them, not slick advertising. It works in religion the same as it works for politics.

Yet, what we have in this state is a weekly liberal radio show (Jeff Bell's Left of the Dial, Saturdays 4-5 PM, KSL 1160AM/102.7FM, on hiatus during football season) and a weekly Alternative newspaper (City Weekly) which can't get an interview with Utah's lone Democratic "Representative" or State Party Chair. Even a Republican running against RepINO Matheson will sit down with the CW.

If a Democrat speaks in Utah, will anyone hear it?

Senate Site Posts Bloggers' Answers to Senator Buttars

Back in August, Senator Chris Buttars posted 22 questions about proposed federal health care legislation on The Senate Site.

And, being the hardest working bloggers in Utah, the boys over at The SideTrack got to work dissecting and answering each and every question (see here, here, here, and here.)

And, thanks to Ric Cantrell (the hardest working Government 2.0 guy out there), their work has been condensed into one post posted on The Senate Site.

Way to go, everybody!

This is why I don't make bets....

Info from The Wiz of Odds:

Alen Howard, a history teacher at Rockwell Charter High in Eagle Mountain, Utah, is a University of Oklahoma graduate stuck in the middle of Brigham Young territory. Howard was so sure the Sooners would beat the Cougars last Saturday that he told his students he would eat a live cricket if the BYU could pull off the upset.

What could possibly go wrong? Oklahoma was a 22-point favorite.

Howard made good on his promise, devouring the cricket with a spoonful of peanut butter, much to the delight of his students.

Right-Wing Hate Speech and 3 Nephi 11

"For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another. " Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi 11:29

Matheson's Almost-There Town Hall

Last week, Jim Matheson held a town hall. Sorta. Well, it was like the other town halls he's had where it was via telephone. Except this time, you could call in to it. That is assuming you got the memo.

Unfortunately, I had to go to work, so I was unable to participate. Fortunately, Jason over at the SideTrack did and gave a rundown.

Glenn Beck = Mormon = Socialist

Last week, Glenn Beck ranted about "Socialist" artwork at Rockefeller Center. So, naturally, I took him to task for it. Using his same logic, I called the religion he and I share Socialist and Paganist.

The Daily Utah Progressive goes a step further, pointing out that when Glenn Beck disses Socialists, he disses his own people:

Yes, Glenn Beck is an LDS convert. But I don’t really want to focus on that. After all, that would be like tearing down half my family. I want to focus on some good things about the Mormon culture, that as a convert, are now apart of Glenn Beck’s supposed religious ideals. If he converted for the right reasons in the first place. Mr. Beck, how well do you know your LDS history? I don’t believe you know anything about them. Did you know that Deseret was a state of clustered socialist communities that worked and lived for their church. They, to this day support all of their kind who are in dire need. The LDS church has a fine history of charity and well fare system. They worked to support ALL of their members. That is by definition, Socialist; working for the good of the WHOLE. ZCMI, a famous department store in SLC for a long, long time. Until a couple years back it was sold two times and is now called macy’s. ZCMI stands for Zion’s Cooperative Mercantile Institution. It was Americas 1st department store. Its true, look it up, ZCMI used to be known as “the people’s store”. Im not going to give you all a history lesson you can look it up here : Utah History Encyclopedia

Mr. Beck, I suggest you take it easy on the “socialist” rhetoric. Little did you know, you were actually tearing you’re own people down. You see, if you really are LDS, then you have “socialist” blood. Take time to look at your people’s history sir

Doing Your Job, No Matter What

Sometimes, we get caught up in how difficult our jobs are. I think there is inspiration in how this reporter keeps going.

It's not fatal!

Health Care: What is the Public Option and Why is it Important?

I stand behind Joe Wilson

At the President's Speech before Congress last Night, South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson shouted back at the President.

"You Lie"

And now, he is being blasted by the left for his breech of decorum. His opponent has raised over $200,000 since Rep Wilson's breach of decorum.

I think the fact that President Obama was telling the truth when Rep Wilson made his outburst stands for itself.

However, I wish more Congresscritters would be willing to stand up and say it. I would have loved if my own RepINO Matheson (or any of the other of the 535 Congresspeople) blurted out "You Lie!" just one of the times I yelled Bullshit to my TV when Bush was delivering a State of the Union.

Or, if Joe Biden had said it during his debate with Sarah Palin.

I enjoy watching Parliament, because they can heckle each other, especially when the Prime Minister comes to visit.

Heck, it would make C-SPAN watchable.

-Bob

P.S. I also wanted to point out that 8 months ago, if you shouted "you lie" at the President of the United States, you'd be called a traitor and Unamerican.

He;s the President, Reporters Should Learn How to Spell His Name

20 hours later, the typo is still there.

A response from the Lt Gov's Office

A response to the email I sent this morning:

Mr. Aagard,

Thank you for contacting the Lieutenant Governor's Office and for your concern.

You are correct that there are some disclosure reports not online. We try very hard to get the reports online as soon as possible, but you must understand that we received hundreds of paper reports and some of these reports have thousands of transactions that must be entered by hand into the website.

Unfortunately, entities are not required to file electronically, they are allow to send in a paper report which must be hand entered.

The law allows our office seven days to get the reports available on the website, we usually get them online within a few days but sometimes it does take the full seven days.

We do however, make every effort to make sure folks have access to all reports, we will email, fax, or mail copies of reports to anybody who asks. I have attached all of the unentered reports as of this morning.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I really appreciate your concerns, I believe there are not enough people like you who would even care to look at our website and ask questions.

Thank you,

Mark J. Thomas
Office Administrator
Lieutenant Governor's Office

Glenn Beck's Crazy Artwork Conspiracy Proves Mormonism is Comunist Paganism

(Note: I do not believe Mormonism is Communist nor Paganist. However, Glenn Beck (a fellow Mormon) does give us a pretty good argument)

In the following video clip (from Huffington Post) Glenn Beck takes a look at some artwork around Rockefeller Cneter.

In the first piece of artwork, there is art of a hammer and sickle and some wheat.

DXang those communist farmers.

But wait, there's an LDS scripture that comes to mind:

1 Now behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men.
2 Therefore, O ye that embark in the service of God, see that ye serve him with all your heart, might, mind and strength, that ye may stand blameless before God at the last day.
3 Therefore, if ye have desires to serve God ye are called to the work;
4 For behold the field is white already to harvest; and lo, he that thrusteth in his sickle with his might, the same layeth up in store that he perisheth not, but bringeth salvation to his soul;

And an even better one, from the Book of Mormon:

Behold, the field was ripe, and blessed are ye, for ye did thrust in the sickle, and did reap with your might, yea, all the day long did ye labor; and behold the number of your sheaves! And they shall be gathered into the garners, that they are not wasted.

Dang Communists!

Oh, and then the second piece of artwork Brother Beck looks at has a strong leader leading Industry (in the form of a horse) to a bright future for the youth.

In Mormonism, we had a strong leader (Brigham Young) who lead an industrious people to a bright future where they focused on their youth.

The third piece of art proves that beating your swords into plowshares as stated in Isaiah (and second Nephi) is Communist also.

But where are the people beating their swords into plowshares? Why in XZion, established in the tops of the mountains......

But in the 4th piece of art, we learn that police beating people and armies wearing gas masks are communist also. JM Bell will be glad to know who got him in Denver last year.

And, well, if we are going to look at symbolic artwork converting the thousands that walk by it every day, let's look at all the people converted to paganism walking past that Salt Lake Temple, shall we?

-Bob

P.S. and don't get me started on the Law of Consecration....

Dear LG Bell: Fix Herbert's Mistakes,Please

Dear Lt Governor Bell,

Congratulations on your new job. I hope that you are successful in being a moderating voice in the Executive branch of our government. I realize that you have only been in the job for a few days, but there is a problem that needs to addressed soon.

You see, Political Action Committees (PACs) had to file financial disclosures by this past Monday. I assume most all of them did.

I can only assume this because the website where I can find the information doesn't have it yet. Every PAC I've looked at says "No Reports Have been filed for 2009"

If I had the resources of a newspaper, I could go hang out at your office and get the information I wanted. Like the fact that the Attorney General's PAC has spent a quarter of a million dollars, or that Peter Corroon has raised $40,000 in a PAC that may become his campaign funds if he decides to run for Governor.

The purpose of the disclosures is so that the citizens can have the information. However, it seems like the information is harder for the public to get than it should be in 2009.

College Dropout Carlos Boozer's Stay In School Message

The tall guy will make $12.70 in the time it takes you to watch this.

"Stay In School" PSA from State of Alaska on Vimeo.

(h/t SLCDunk)

I *ALMOST* agree with Gayle Ruzika

The story, from KSL:

Video Courtesy of KSL.com

And the big, bad controversial video:

Now,it does have a bit of a political message. After all, someone wears an Obama shirt, and the pledging service to Barack Obama is a little much.

And I am very against showing a political message to a bunch of school children.

However, I wonder if there would be this big of an uproar from Gayle Ruzika if this was last year, and it was George W Bush that was quoted.

But, Gayle is right. service is a crazy, liberal agenda. After all, it was a great liberal leader named Benjamin that said "When ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God."
