University of Utah Marching Band Trying to Get to Inauguration

DesNews:

Within days of returning from rousing the Ute crowd at the Sugar Bowl, the University of Utah Marching Utes have been invited to board another plane and march in the presidential inaugural parade in Washington, D.C.

The 128-member band, including all of their uniforms, instruments and flags and other equipment, will need to find $150,000 in the next two weeks in order to represent the state on Jan. 20. It is depending on donations and other sources to foot the bill.

"In the financial year that we've had with budget cuts and money being tight everywhere, there's no university money available to support the band. We'll have to rely on external sources," said Robert Walzel, director of the U. School of Music.

"It would be a great opportunity for our students to be able to represent the state in what looks to be a landmark event," he said.

And, assuming the money gets raised, I'm sure you can see them off at the parade for the football team on the 16th.

Red vs Blue Poem

I read this poem today, and it sums up my feelings quite well:

The Red and the Blue

I vote for blue and root for red,
I’m sure I will until I’m dead,
A moderate liberal is my creed,
A Utah Man it’s red I bleed,

I take on those who offer myths,
I think of cougar fans as stiffs,
No honor code I drink merlot,
Just like some cougar fans I know,

I hang with people zoobies scorn,
Like liberals, gays and lowly born,
Admit I must I still break bread,
With those in blue instead of red,

My mother, brother, sister too,
Attended school, that school of blue,
And even some have voted red,
Didn’t they hear a word I’ve said?,

And love them still though pity most,
These folk I love amidst such a host,
Long-suffering often's been my fate,
Voting blue in this red state,

But lift my chin cause who’d a guessed,
An Obama win and the BCS,
Have made it spring in this dreary fall,
Destroying the Y- THAT SAYS IT ALL

Congratulations Utes and Obama
You’ve made my year

Utah 48 BYU 24
Obama 365 McCain 173

LaVarr Webb's Asinine attempt at a joke

From today's Utah Policy Daily:

Want to Protest? Wear Black

I know many people are upset over the results of the presidential election. For those Utahns who are really concerned, and who might happen to be attending a football game tonight, a good way to protest would be to wear black. I’ve been making that suggestion to lots of people, and it will be very interesting to see how many people actually follow my advice. I’ll be watching on TV (wearing blue).

And, since the crowd at tonight's Utah Utes game has been encouraged to wear black themselves, it will look like they all are protesting the election.

I hoe he was joking.

And, to further the lame joke, I encourage everyone who is excited about the Presidential election results attending Saturday's BYU game or Friday's Jazz game wear blue or white.

Yeah, that will show 'em.

BYU. Utah, and Irony

So BYU and the University of Utah have invited Vice President Dick Cheney and President Thomas S Monson to be their graduation speakers.

One is second in command of a secular instution. The other is second in command of a religious organization. Both are literally a heartbeat away from being the leader of their respective groups.

However, the irony lies with the fact that BYU (the religious School) has the secular leader, while the University of Utah (the secular schhol) has the religious leader.
