My opinion: the Mormon mentality has become that “pretty” equals successful and spiritual. The reality, though, is that if we’re healthy, we will be successful in more things, including spirituality. But instead of doing the things that are naturally required to keep ourselves healthy and successful, we short-circuit the process by making ourselves looking healthy and successful, while inside we are full of “dead men’s bones”.
It’s much the same in our being suckers for get-rich-quick schemes. We think if we’re upstanding we’ll be rich, so we turn it around to say that if we’re rich that means we’re upstanding.
At least it appears that way, but…
We’re wrong on both counts.
