Utah's Biggest Public Education Problem

One of the biggest complaints I hear about public education is that school boards are not responsive to parents.

Like all publicly elected officials, they are accountable to voters who reelect them every year.

If they are not responsive, don't reelect them.

However, the school board is probably the least-recognized elected positions in the state. I'd be willing to bet that most people couldn't name their school board member. Or ANY school board member.

I'm guilty of this as well. But, at least I know that she's a woman. Her campaign literature made her seem like a nice, grandmotherly type. The incumbent had no literature.

The incumbent was running for his third term. It was the first time he had opposition.

I'd be willing to bet that if you wanted to hold elective office and didn't care what seat you held, school board would be the easiest to win.

And it's because nobody seems to care.

And that's sad.
