FOX News Poll Bad For Romney

Fox News, that bastion of liberal media, released a new poll today.

And, well that poll looks bad.  It's bad for Mitt Romney.

The poll was conducted by live telephone calls on both cell phones and land line phones August 5-7.  All respondents were registered voters.  Margin of error is 3 points.

Romney 40%
Obama 49%
Other 2%
Would Vote 2%
Don't Know 8%

So, what you have is Obama with a 9-point lead over Romney.  In their July 15-17 poll, that number was 45-41 Obama, so he's increasing his lead.

One thing that made me nervous was that respondents were asked how interested about the election they were.    Of those who were "Extremely Interested" (42% of the sample), The Romney-Obama race was tied at 48-48.  However, in the previous poll, Romney led extremely interested voters 53-42.  So, Romney is losing ground with those extremely interested.

On Favorable/Unfavorable ratings for the candidates, we see Obama is more favorable than Romney

Obama 54% Favorable 42% Unfavorable
Romney 46% Favorable 45% Unfavorable

And, according to this poll, Obama has a 49% approval rating (46% disapprove).  President Obama has hovered between 42-49% since he hit 55% approval in May 2011 (just after the bin Laden kill).  While it's tough to win as an incumbent with an approval rating below 50%, It seems kike many of those who don't approve of Obama still won't vote for Mitt.

And, they asked the 71% that would be somewhat or not very comfortable with a President Romney what the main reason they felt that way. And, the answers they gave showed us where Romney fails:

So, most of the answers given are about Mitt the man, and it's hard to reintroduce yourself to the American people.  It can be done, but it's hard.  Especially when people have an opinion that you are an out of touch, dishonest rich politician in it for yourself.

Let's look at Obama on the same question:

Congressman Slams Glenn Beck Over Gold Ads

Forget fast-forwarding through the commercials. New York Congressman Anthony Weiner clearly watches his news broadcasts live, because he’s seen some ads that have really ticked him off.

Weiner is calling for an investigation into precious metals seller Goldline, a company Weiner claims employs conservative broadcast talkers to scare viewers into investing in gold -– at grossly inflated prices.

“On numerous occasions, Glenn Beck has dedicated entire segments of his program to explaining why the U.S. money supply is destined for hyperinflation with Barack Obama as president. He will often promote the purchase of gold as the only safe investment alternative for consumers who want to safeguard their livelihoods. When the show cuts to commercial break, viewers are treated to an advertisement from Goldline,” Weiner says in a report released Wednesday.

Also mentioned by name in the report: Fred Thompson, Dennis Miller, Mark Levin, Laura Ingraham, Lars Larson, Michael Smerconish, Monica Crowley and Mike Huckabee. All paid Goldline spokespeople, all taking to the airwaves to tell people to invest in gold — and fast.

Weiner says Goldline’s most egregious, misleading sales tactic has involved the standard pricing of its gold – which he claims is 90 percent above melt value. That means the value of gold would have to double for the buyer to simply break even on the purchase. Beyond that, Weiner says, Goldline representatives present themselves as financial advisors even though they have no license to do so.

Goldline has already caused something of an ethical stir over at Fox News. Beck was a paid spokesperson for the company, until he was forced to step down in order to conform to network ethics policies. Even after that mini-scandal, however, Goldline remains a major sponsor of Beck’s show. If Weiner has his way, those ads will change quite a bit — and fast

War on Christmas, er, FOX

Remember a few years ago when we fought the War on Christmas? We all lined up, took sides, and then had a fight until January, when a War on Christmas truce was declared until next Christmas season.

It was a war made up and perpetuated by Fox News.

And now, we have a war against Fox News. Apparently, the White House started it. Which is a little bit like Japan accusing the US of starting WWII.

And, for that matter, FOX News and Opinion Network (see video) ignores the War the Bush Administration waged against MSNBC. How many exclusive interviews did FX get with the VPOTUS Cheney from 2001-2008?

As usual, Jon Stewart hit the nail on the head:

Glenn Beck's lack of sincerity

Tribune Television Critic Vince Horiuchi:

Perhaps Beck's biggest fault is his lack of sincerity. He cries not for the future of America, as he so dramatically does on camera. He weeps for ratings (which, after this controversy, reached a personal high of 2.4 million viewers daily).

How does he care about the victims of the 9/11 attacks when he also criticizes many of the victims' families because "they're always complaining" -- yet shamelessly uses the 9/11 tragedy to push his "9-12 Project," a movement to bring together like-minded people based on his nine principles and 12 moral values? (One of his 9-12 principles is "I must always try to be a more honest person than I was yesterday." He's obviously not trying hard enough.)

I support Beck's right to be a completely selfish, egomaniacal TV and radio personality who uses scare tactics on an unsuspecting nation for higher ratings. Fox can keep him on the air for as long as it wants to.

But everyone else has the right to stop him through any legal means possible.

In an interview on FOXNews, Mitt Romney was asked for his two favorite books.

The first one he mentioned is the Bible. I hope he takes some time to read that one again.

The second was Battlefield Earth by L Ron Hubbard.

Yes, that L Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology.

Cobert had a little fun with that choice.

Maybe Mitt can get Tom Cruise out of the closet (gratuitous South Park reference).

The poll was "Who is the most foolish American?"

The anchors said it was Britney Spears and Paris Hilton "nearly tied" for the lead.
